Mission LiFE: Vijayash Foundation Champions a Sustainable Future

At Vijayash Foundation, our commitment to leadership and sustainability drives us to support transformative initiatives like Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment). Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 20, 2022, at the Statue of Unity in Gujarat, this India-led global movement aims to mobilize one billion people by 2028 to adopt sustainable lifestyles and protect our planet. Here’s how Mission LiFE is shaping a greener future—and how VF is contributing to this global call to action.

A Vision for Mindful Living

Introduced at COP26 in Glasgow (2021), Mission LiFE promotes mindful and deliberate utilization over wasteful consumption, rooted in India’s cultural etho

s of sustainability. It envisions a world where individuals and communities become Pro-Planet People (P3), fostering eco-friendly habits through a Jan Andolan (mass movement). The goal? Make 80% of India’s villages and urban areas eco-friendly by 2028 while inspiring global change.

A Three-Pronged Strategy for Change

Mission LiFE drives sustainability through a strategic approach:

  • Change in Demand: Encouraging individuals to adopt simple, eco-friendly actions daily.
  • Change in Supply: Inspiring industries to meet the demand for sustainable products.
  • Change in Policy: Shaping government and industrial policies to support sustainability.

Rooted in India’s Sustainable Heritage

Mission LiFE draws from India’s traditions, like using clay kulhads or biodegradable sal leaf plates, embodying the principles of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Key features include:

  • Mindful Consumption: Prioritizing sustainable resource use.
  • Behavioral Change: Using campaigns like the LiFE 21-Day Challenge to build eco-friendly habits.
  • Pro-Planet People: Creating a global network of sustainability advocates.
  • Global Collaboration: Inviting ideas through initiatives like the LiFE Global Call for Papers (launched June 5, 2022).

Seven Focus Areas for Impact

Mission LiFE targets seven key areas to drive climate-friendly behaviors:

  1. Save Energy: Promoting energy-efficient appliances and practices.
  2. Save Water: Encouraging conservation techniques.
  3. Say No to Single-Use Plastic: Advocating reusable alternatives.
  4. Adopt Sustainable Food Systems: Supporting local and plant-based diets.
  5. Reduce Waste: Promoting recycling and segregation.
  6. Adopt Healthy Lifestyles: Encouraging eco-friendly habits like cycling.
  7. Promote Biodiversity: Supporting ecosystem conservation.

The Ideas4LiFE contest, with 1,384 entries by May 2025, showcased 21 innovative solutions across these themes, proving the power of collective creativity.

India’s Environmental Leadership

India’s track record underpins Mission LiFE’s credibility:

  • Low Carbon Footprint: India’s per capita emissions are just 1.5 tons, compared to the global 4-ton average.
  • Renewable Energy: Ranking 4th globally, India boosted capacity by 290% in 7–8 years, achieving 40% non-fossil fuel electric capacity nine years early.
  • National Initiatives: Programs like Swachh Bharat (mobilizing 550 million people), Amrit Sarovar (75 water bodies per district), and the International Solar Alliance align with Mission LiFE’s goals.
  • Afforestation: Efforts like the National Afforestation Programme enhance forest cover with community participation.

Global Impact and Opportunities

Mission LiFE addresses the triple planetary crisis—climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution—threatening 3 billion people with water scarcity and an 18% GDP loss by 2050. The UNEP estimates that 1 billion people adopting eco-friendly behaviors could cut global emissions by 20%. Supported by global leaders like António Guterres, Bill Gates, and Inger Andersen, Mission LiFE also promises 65 million jobs by 2030, advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) like SDG 6 (Clean Water) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

Challenges and Progress

Changing habits is tough, but Mission LiFE leverages India’s cultural minimalism and campaigns like the LiFE 21-Day Challenge to make sustainability relatable. Coordinated by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, with partners like NITI Aayog and the UN, the initiative uses behavioral science (FEAST framework) to make eco-actions fun and accessible. By May 2025, Ideas4LiFE and social media campaigns on platforms like X have amplified awareness, with India’s 2030 NDC targeting a 45% emission intensity reduction.
